Simple Answers from EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna: Spark Plugs

Question: I’m confused about when I should get my spark plugs replaced. What’s the deal? Answer from EUROPRO AUTOHAUS: Well it can be confusing for Kelowna drivers because there are several types of spark plugs and some last longer than others. Your owner’s manual will have a recommendation for when your spark plugs should be changed. Here’s a little background from EUROPRO AUTOHAUS. Spark plugs are in the combustion chamber of your engine. They send a little spark between two electrodes at the end of the spark plug which ignites the gasoline. This little spark goes off thousands of times a minute. Over the kilometers, the electrodes on standard grade spark plugs wear away increasing the gap between them. When that happens, the spark isn’t as strong and the fuel doesn’t burn as well. As mentioned above, there are several types or grades of spark plugs. The standard grade is copper core. They are good for quick starts. Single platinum spark plugs use platinum on one of the electrodes. These have improved ignitability and performance. Double platinum plugs use platinum on both electrodes. This virtually eliminates gap erosion. Then there are the plugs that use iridium in their electrodes. These usually last longer than the other types. They are very durable and give premium performance and improved fuel economy. Now it's vital that Kelowna drivers always use at least the grade of spark plug that originally came on their vehicle. This makes sure that your spark plugs are up to delivering the performance and fuel economy your vehicle was designed for. Of course, you may upgrade your spark plugs for better durability and performance. Talk with your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor about how you want your vehicle to perform and let him help you choose the spark plug that best suits your needs. Suspension System Service at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna

Suspension systems should continue to operate effectively for many years and tens of thousands of kilometers for Kelowna drivers, holding your tires’ foot print on the road. Eventually components do wear out, but how long that takes depends a lot on how you drive around Kelowna.

As you can imagine, if most of your driving is on smooth Kelowna highways, your shock absorbers will last a lot longer than if you do most of your driving on bumpy roads in Kelowna or hauling heavy loads. In addition to just wearing out, suspension components can be damaged in an accident or by a hard impact, like a pothole, hitting a curb or a rock on a back country Kelowna area road.

Because the life span of shocks can vary so widely, your car maker recommends periodic shock inspections. During an inspection, your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor will check for worn, broken or missing suspension parts.

If the inspection reveals any problems, take care of this important safety and handling work. We can help you at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna. When you replace your shocks, it’s usually a good idea to replace all four at the same time. That’ll give you even handling at all four corners of the vehicle.

If you have special road handling needs like improved cornering or towing or hauling requirements, your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor can recommend upgraded shocks or struts to get you what you want.

Simple Answers from EUROPRO AUTOHAUS for Kelowna: Tire Rotation and Balancing

Question:

How do I know when I should get my tires rotated and balanced?

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Answer:
The interval for tire rotation could depend on a recommendation from either the tire manufacturer or the car maker. The interval is typically around 8,000 kilometers but could range from 5,000 to 13,000 kilometers. The background question for Kelowna drivers is why do tires need to be rotated?

Front tires wear differently than the rear tires because steering wears the shoulders faster up front. Rotating the position of the tires allows for more even wear among all the tires. Now the suspension set-up on certain vehicles may also affect the relative wear between the front and rear. There are several rotation patterns – your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor will see that you get the correct pattern for your particular vehicle.

Wheels and tires are not perfectly balanced due to slight variations in the manufacturing process and the placement of tire pressure monitoring sensors. So weights are strategically placed on the wheel to ensure that the tire spins true. When a wheel is out of balance it is essentially bouncing thousands of extra times every kilometer. Now this can result in an uncomfortable vibration for Kelowna drivers in the steering wheel or through the seat. An unbalanced tire will also wear quicker and it is harmful for your shocks and struts.

Kelowna drivers should have their wheels balanced if they detect a vibration or uneven wear. A wheel balance check every year is a good idea. Because tires cost so much in the Kelowna area, it’s a great idea to do everything you can to make them last as long as possible. Proper tire inflation, regular tire rotation and wheel balancing are vital keys to long tire life. The team at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna can inspect your tires for signs of uneven wear and diagnose and correct the problem.

Headlamp Safety for Kelowna Drivers

Kelowna drivers may be surprised to learn that 40% of traffic fatalities take place at night even though there’s 60% less traffic. It goes to show how important proper visibility is to nighttime driving.

Obviously, a clean windshield is important – so are good wiper blades. Your headlights play a big role as well. There are two main concerns. One is with the headlamp, or bulb. The other is with the lens.

The fact of the matter is that headlamps go dim over time. Kelowna drivers just need to replace them. Some vehicles come with a standard blub which you can replace or you can upgrade to a halogen bulb that’s much brighter. Halogen costs a little more but you’d be amazed at the difference.

It’s a good idea for Kelowna drivers to replace their headlamps once a year. The idea is that your lamps never dim to the point that they become a safety issue.

The other big issue is the headlamp lens. For the last couple of decades, most lenses are made of plastic which can get cloudy or yellow. That blocks a lot of light. You can replace the lens, but each lens assembly can cost as much as $350 to $400. It’s much less expensive to restore a headlight lens if it isn’t broken.

At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS, we use a process of special cleaners and polishes to remove the yellowed and hazy layer of the lens. We then apply a hard protective finish. When we’re done, your lenses really are as good as new.

The price depends on the size of the lens and how yellowed or cloudy it is. Kelowna drivers can even restore taillights and turn signals.

So combining a headlamp restoration with new bulbs will light up the road like a new car. Can you clearly see the advantage?

Transmission

Let's talk about your transmission.

Transmissions are heavy duty pieces of equipment that are designed to last a long time for most Kelowna drivers. But like any other machine, they'll eventually wear out and need repair. So let's focus on what you can do to push that day off as far as possible.

The first thing you can do is to make sure your transmission always has enough fluid. Transmission fluid cools and lubricates the transmission. When there's not enough fluid, the transmission will run hotter and wear out sooner.

The transmission fluid also provides the pressure needed to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. Not enough fluid, and your transmission won't shift properly.

Your Kelowna service center will check your transmission fluid level with a full service oil change and top it off if needed. If you see any transmission fluid on the driveway – it's a reddish color, have EUROPRO AUTOHAUS inspect it for a leak. A gasket, hose or seal could be leaking and may need to be repaired.

The next thing you can do to prolong the life of your Kelowna transmission is to replace your transmission fluid on schedule. As you can imagine, all those gears grinding on each other result in lots of little bits of metal in the fluid. The more there is, the faster the transmission parts will wear out.

Transmission fluid also contains detergents and other additives to protect your transmission. These additives are depleted over time, so old fluid doesn't protect as well as new fluid. Your owner's manual or Kelowna service advisor at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS will have a recommendation for when you should have a transmission service.

If your transmission isn't shifting as smoothly as it should, or if you suspect a transmission leak, let EUROPRO AUTOHAUS take a look at it. And ask if it's time for a transmission service. Regular maintenance and taking care of small leaks right away will help your transmission last as long as possible.

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Automotive Tips: Quality Replacement Parts

Let me tell you about an experience at a well-established Kelowna Italian restaurant that had changed hands a few months ago. The previous owners were an Italian couple that used old family recipes and fantastic fresh ingredients to make their pasta and sauces from scratch. They enjoyed distinctive reviews for decades.

The new owners were taking a different approach. The cooks followed the same recipes, but were required to use bagged salads, canned sauces and vegetables, frozen meat, and boxed pasta. Needless to say, there was a night and day difference between the before and after dining experience and their online reviews reflected the decline. Same chefs, same recipes, same Kelowna location. Poor ingredients.

Now, you can imagine how vital high quality replacement parts are for vehicle repairs. The parts necessary to deliver the performance you expect right out of the box and over the long haul. At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS, we feature quality NAPA auto parts. They meet or exceed the original car maker specifications so they fit and function as they should.

It’s vital for a business to stand behind its work. At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna, we do everything we can to stand behind ours. We employ highly trained service advisors and equip them with the diagnostic and repair tools they need to keep your vehicle in tip-top shape. NAPA Auto Parts helps us deliver on our promises to you with high quality replacement parts that help your vehicle run safely and efficiently.

Skilled service advisors and quality replacement parts: that’s a recipe for Kelowna drivers' motoring satisfaction.

Did You Know About Alternator

When you replace your alternator, it's a good idea to replace your serpentine belt at the same time. Your technician will have to remove the old belt anyway so he might as well put on a new one when he's done. And the number-1 alternator killer is a battery that's on its last legs; the alternator has to overwork to keep it charged. If your battery is 5 years old; ask your Kelowna technician if it's time to replace it. At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna we install quality NAPA replacement parts. Get Fresh Air Inside Your Car

BC air quality affects Kelowna drivers wherever we are. Many decades ago, people began to become aware of how air pollution negatively affects health. But what about the air inside your vehicle?

Cabin air filters are now coming on most new vehicles since the 2000 model year. These filters clean the air in the passenger compartment.

They can filter particles down to three microns, so that’s good enough to clean out dust, pollen and most pollutants. If you suffer from allergies, this is very good news.

You can look in your owner’s manual to see if you have a cabin air filter. If you do, there’ll be a recommendation for replacing it when it gets dirty. If you live where there’s a lot of dust, pollen or pollution, you may need to change it more often. You can also ask your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor.

How hard it is to change a cabin air filter depends on your vehicle. Some are quite accessible; others take some doing to get to them. They’re usually in the engine compartment or under the dashboard.

Because cabin air filters are so new on the scene, some Kelowna drivers haven’t heard of them – even people who have cabin air filters. EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisors report customers complaining of an unpleasant odor in their vehicle and it turned out to be a dirty cabin air filter.

An important note for BC hybrid owners: there is a special air filter that cleans the air that cools the hybrid battery pack. This filter should be inspected every time the cabin air filter is inspected and replaced if it is dirty so that the battery pack doesn’t overheat.

Alternator Replacement at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS

Many Kelowna drivers have probably noticed a bunch of warning lights on their dash when they start their engine. They flash on to test the circuits and then go off if everything’s OK. One of the warning lights looks like a car battery. Its job is to tell you if your vehicle battery’s not charging properly.

Kelowna motorists probably know that their battery stores electricity – enough to start the engine and get moving. But that’s about it – you can only get a few miles on battery power alone. You need an alternator to generate enough electricity to run your vehicle engine and power your electrical accessories like the stereo, power seats, heater fan, on-board computers, and so on. On top of that, the alternator needs to recharge your battery. So when your vehicle alternator isn’t working, there isn’t enough electricity for all of those things. When your alternator fails, you aren’t going very far.

So why would your vehicle alternator not work? Usually they’ve simply worn out. Alternators are driven by your serpentine belt and spin 2 to 3 times faster than the engine – that’s a lot of work. The bearings wear out, as do the cooper wire coils and magnets that generate the electricity.

There’s no sense in hobbling along on BC expressways with an alternator that’s not working properly. It will fail at some point and leave you stranded on the road. Get a bad alternator replaced as soon as you can. When you come to EUROPRO AUTOHAUS for an alternator replacement, your service advisor will install an alternator that meets your car maker’s specifications. Some drivers use a lot of additional electrical gizmos in the vehicle, like computers, DVD players, power inverters and such or may regularly tow a camp trailer that’s battery recharges as you drive. If that sounds like you, talk with your service advisor about upgrading to a more heavy duty alternator to meet your needs.

Serpentine Belt Replacement at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna

Hello, Kelowna drivers! Today's EUROPRO AUTOHAUS auto care topic is the serpentine belt. Your serpentine belt is a long belt that’s driven by your engine. It winds around several accessories that power important automotive systems. Let’s go over them.

• First, the serpentine belt drives your air conditioning system.
• Next, the belt powers the alternator.
• The serpentine belt may also run the pumps for both the power steering and power brakes. In some Kelowna drivers' vehicles, power steering may have an electric drive and power brakes can be vacuum driven.
• And, on many vehicles, the serpentine belt powers the water pump (on some cars, the water pump is powered by the timing belt).

Your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor can perform a visual inspection of the belt to see if it has any cracks that signal the belt could fail soon and will measure the amount of belt material to make sure there is enough.

There’s a special, spring loaded pulley attached to the engine called the tensioner pulley and sometimes an extra pulley call the idler pulley. Their vital job is to make sure there’s a constant tension on the serpentine belt so that it doesn’t slip. The spring can become worn and no longer provide the necessary pressure to keep the belt tight. That’s why EUROPRO AUTOHAUS recommends that the tensioner, and the idler pulley if so equipped, be replaced at the same time as the serpentine belt.

All in all, the serpentine belt’s an essential part for the function of your vehicle. And it’s not that expensive to replace at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna – so it’s good to do so before it fails.

Spark Plugs

In Kelowna BC, the days when you changed your spark plugs every couple of years has ended. Back in the day, spark plugs really did wear out that often. A couple of things are different now…

First, spark plugs are made of better materials that last longer and they're designed better. The second reason why spark plugs used to have to be changed in vehicles was that they were fouled up with carbon deposits. The deposits built up when fuel wasn't burned completely. With modern engine management controls, that just doesn't happen as often.

Engine control computers precisely time when fuel is injected into the engine and when spark plugs fire. Unless something's wrong, spark plugs just don't foul like they used to.

Electricity from the battery goes into a coil that allows power to build up to anywhere from 12,000 to 45,000 volts, depending on the vehicle. The engine management computer tells the coil when to release the power to the spark plug. The electricity travels through a wire from the coil to the spark plug. At the tip of the plug, a spark jumps between two electrodes and ignites the gas in the combustion chamber.

Some engines have more than one coil. Coils wear out and need to be replaced occasionally. Also, spark plug wires can wear out and need to be replaced.

Modern engines used around Kelowna are delivering more power and better fuel economy all the time. That's largely credited to fast engine control computers, advanced sensors, electronic ignition and improvements to the lowly spark plug.

It'll be interesting to see where future developments take us. One last thought: it's critically important to have the right kind of spark plug for your vehicle. Because engines are designed to run with different internal temperatures, spark plugs have different designs to work properly within those temperatures. Your Kelowna BC service advisor at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS will be able to get the right plugs for your vehicle. And he'll be able to advise you on when you should replace your spark plugs as well.

Deep Breathing in Kelowna: Engine Air Filter

Your vehicle engine really needs clean air to operate efficiently: it takes about twelve thousand gallons of air to burn a gallon of gas in your vehicle engine. And all Kelowna drivers know that clean air is much better than dirty.

When your air filter’s dirty, it simply can’t trap any more dirt, so the dirt just passes through into your air intake system. From there it can get into the vehicle engine combustion chamber. And burning dust and pollen in your vehicle engine does you no good.

The verdict: When your engine air filter needs to be replaced; it needs to be replaced. How often depends entirely on how dirty the air is where you drive in BC. A simple visual inspection at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS will tell you when you need a new engine air filter.

When Kelowna drivers look at their air filter on the furnace in their Kelowna home and see it’s all clogged up with dust and dirt, they don’t hesitate to replace it. But don’t wait until your air filter (furnace or automobile) is totally plugged,  by that time you’ve been running inefficiently for a lot of miles. When your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor brings out your nasty engine air filter, you now know why you should go ahead and change it out.

Simple Answers from EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna : Severe Service

Question:

What is a severe service maintenance schedule?

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Answer:
When I was a kid in Kelowna, Sunday meant having a bath, getting dressed for church and then hanging up my Sunday clothes as soon as we got home. Mom didn’t have to wash those clothes but once a month or so.

Now, Saturdays were another story entirely: catching lizards, splash contests in mud puddles and crawling through the brush with GI Joe. Those clothes went straight into the laundry basket. My Sunday clothes, easy use. My Saturday clothes, hard use. They required a different laundry schedule. Severe service maintenance schedules are kind of like that for Kelowna drivers. “Normal” driving has a regular schedule; “hard” driving has a severe service schedule. Service intervals are shorter on the severe schedule.

Most owner’s manuals will describe severe service as:
Stop and go driving
Short trips
Low speed driving
Extreme hot or cold
Dusty conditions
Carrying heavy loads
Towing

For most Kelowna people, some “severe” driving is part of their everyday routine. You can talk to your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor about how you drive around the Kelowna area and see if your routine is closer to the regular or severe definitions and adjust your service intervals for things like oil changes, transmission and cooling system service.

Kelowna Drivers Ask: Why is My Check Engine Light On?

dashboard

The Check Engine Light strikes fear into the hearts of some Kelowna drivers and is totally ignored by just as many.

First, if your check engine light is flashing, that means that something is wrong that could cause severe damage to the catalytic converter or other components. Get that taken care of right away. If your check engine light is flashing, you shouldn’t drive at highway speeds, tow or haul heavy loads. Take it easy all the way to your Kelowna service center.

If the light is glowing steadily, you should keep an eye on it for a day or two. If the light doesn’t go off, schedule an appointment with your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor to get it checked out.

Some more information on how the Check Engine Light works may be informative to Kelowna drivers. Most of your vehicle engine functions are controlled by a computer, not surprisingly, called an engine control computer. The computer is able to adjust many engine parameters for environmental conditions, engine condition and even the way you drive.

In order to make these adjustments, the computer relies on a network of sensors to provide data. The computer knows the proper operating range for each sensor. When a sensor reading is out of range the computer runs some tests and may turn on the Check Engine Light.

The computer will also try to make adjustments to compensate for some readings. If it can do so, it’ll then turn off the Check Engine Light.

If the problem can’t be resolved then the light will remain on and you should get your vehicle checked at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS.

Our friendly professionals will plug a scanner into the on-board diagnostic port and read the trouble code stored in the computer. The trouble code will give the service advisor a starting place as he diagnoses the cause of the problem.

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Automotive Tips: Oxygen Sensor

Many Kelowna drivers hear the term “Oxygen Sensor” and figure it must have something to do with sensing oxygen, but don’t really know much beyond that.

Let’s talk about it. Your vehicle has an oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold that measures how much unburned oxygen there is in the exhaust. The sensor reports its findings to the engine control unit (ECU), which knows how much oxygen there should be in the exhaust. Based on that vital information, the ECU will adjust the amount of fuel it sends to the engine.

This feedback and adjustment loop is non-stop. The goal is to have the optimal air to fuel ratio for performance, efficiency and to lower harmful emissions.

Now there is a second oxygen sensor located in the exhaust pipe after the catalytic converter. It too measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust after it has been treated by the catalytic converter. As this measurement is reported back to the ECU, the computer compares the oxygen levels before and after the catalytic converter to determine if the converter is still functioning properly.

So, 4-cylinder vehicles have two oxygen sensors. V-6 and V-8 engines have four sensors, two for each bank of cylinders. As you can imagine, the oxygen sensor lives and functions in a pretty hot environment so they do wear out over time. Substances in the exhaust can also damage them leading to failure. Outside elements like water and road salt can corrode an oxygen sensor. When the sensor goes bad it simply needs to be replaced.

BC drivers may be interested to know that oxygen sensors are often replaced needlessly. When the oxygen sensor returns a measurement that is out of the specified range, it may trigger a trouble code in the ECU and the Check Engine Light is illuminated.

Inexperienced Kelowna do-it-yourselfers or parts store employees may read a trouble code that reports an out of range sensor reading. That could mean that the sensor is bad, but it could also mean that the sensor is accurately reporting a condition caused by some other trouble. A skilled diagnostician at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS can sort this out and will only replace the oxygen sensor when it has truly gone bad.

When you have a Check Engine Light come on and stay on, it’s good advice to have it checked out by a qualified EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor. The cause may be minor or quite vital, so it’s best for Kelowna drivers to play it safe and let the professionals determine if it's necessary.

Diesel Maintenance at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS

A lot of Kelowna drivers are excited about the new diesel engines that are becoming available in passenger cars and SUV’s and they’re curious about the preventive maintenance requirements for diesels. Kelowna drivers may not know that diesel engines have long been used extensively in Europe and Asia. In fact, in some markets, there’re nearly as many diesel powered passenger cars as there are gasoline.

You may ask, why has it taken so long getting them to North America? There are a bunch of reasons like BC fuel tax policies and such, but the biggest hurtle was that North American diesel fuel had a high sulfur content – too high for the latest generation of highly refined diesel engines. Recent government mandates to remove sulfur now opens North America up to the engines the rest of the world’s been enjoying for a long time.

Why are diesels so popular worldwide? Well, for starters, diesels get up to 30% better gas mileage than gas engines. And they last a lot longer. And modern diesel engines are refined, quiet and powerful – and there’s none of that black smoke we used to see. Some Kelowna drivers may think that diesels create more pollution. But, you need to rethink diesels. Environmental pollution standards for diesel cars and light trucks are scheduled to be as strict as they are for gasoline vehicles.

A modern diesel engine is as clean as a gas engine. And, there are not a lot of trade offs with diesel in terms of performance. A modern passenger car diesel is very smooth, quiet and quick. Most Kelowna drivers wouldn’t notice any difference. For those Kelowna area folks who tow trailers and haul heavy loads, diesels will be an improvement.

Now diesel engines are heavy duty, so they cost more than gas engines in Kelowna. But they get better gas mileage – so the break-even point is largely dependent on the difference between gas and diesel prices at your Kelowna pump and how many miles you drive. And diesels have a higher resale value in BC.

Now, let’s get back to diesel maintenance in Kelowna. Diesels do require very clean fuel, air and oil, so their filters are much higher capacity than gasoline filters and cost more. The engine air filter needs to be changed more frequently as well. Repair costs in Kelowna are similar. As with gasoline engines, proper maintenance is the key to long engine life and to avoiding repairs. So pretty much what we have come to expect with gas vehicles; coolant system service, transmission service, power brakes, power steering, differential, filters, fuel system, and so on. And the payoff for you, if you’re one of the Kelowna drivers that likes to keep your vehicles for a long time, is that a properly maintained diesel engine can last for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Service Your Drum Brakes at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna

Brakes that work properly are essential to the safety of Kelowna drivers. You want to carefully maintain your brakes. In vehicles equipped with drum brakes, the brake components are housed inside a drum that rotates with the wheel. When you step on the brake pedal, brake shoes push out against the inside of the drum, slowing the wheel.

Now brake shoes just wear away with use from rubbing on the drum as you brake. When it’s time to replace brake shoes at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna, it’s a straight-forward repair. If you hear squealing or grinding when braking, have your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor check them out. He’ll have your service advisor perform a thorough brake inspection to see what needs to be done. He’ll check for signs of brake problems and go over other brake components to see that they’re working properly. He can tell you if it’s time to replace the shoes or if there are other issues with your brakes that should be addressed.

Some Kelowna drivers ignore the warning signs and keep driving long after the shoes are completely worn out. When that happens, metal brake components will grind against the drum, damaging it enough that it has to be resurfaced or replaced. When you push on your brake pedal, the wheel cylinder is activated and it pushes the shoes against the drum to slow the vehicle. This cylinder, and various springs within the brake, can wear out affecting your ability to stop. The worn components can be easily replaced. The new shoes we put on your vehicle at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna will restore your brakes to manufacturers’ specifications. Or, we can install upgraded parts to increase your stopping power and reduce brake noise and brake dust.

At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna, we have several options to meet your braking requirements and your budget. Taking care of your brakes keeps them working safely – and you could prevent premature brake repairs down the road.

Fuel Filter

Hello Kelowna drivers, let's talk fuel filters. The function of the fuel filter is pretty self-explanatory. It filters your fuel. The fuel filter is in the fuel line somewhere in between the fuel tank and the engine. Both gas and diesel vehicles use fuel filters.

Generally speaking there’s not a lot of dirt in the fuel supply, but there is enough that Kelowna drivers want to screen it out. The problem actually gets worse the older your vehicle becomes. That’s because dirt, rust and contaminates will settle out of the fuel and onto the bottom of the fuel tank. After a car is five years or older, it can actually have a fair amount of sediment built up.

That just means that the fuel filter has to work harder as your vehicle ages. It’ll get clogged sooner and need to be replaced more often.

A symptom of a clogged fuel filter is that the engine sputters at BC highway speeds or under hard acceleration. That’s because enough fuel is getting through around Kelowna, but when you need more fuel for speed, enough just can’t get through the filter. Obviously, that could be dangerous if your car or truck can’t get enough power to get you out of harm’s way on a busy BC freeway.

For just that reason, fuel filters have a bypass valve. When the filter is severely clogged, some fuel can bypass the filter all together. Of course that means that dirty, unfiltered fuel is getting through to be burned in the vehicle engine.

This dirt can then clog and damage your fuel injectors. Now injectors are not cheap to replace in Kelowna, so you don’t want to cause them damage just because you didn’t spend a few bucks to replace a fuel filter.

You know, in a way, the fuel filter can be the poster child for preventive maintenance. It’s a little part, it’s simple and it’s cheap to take care of at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna. But if it’s neglected, it could lead to thousands of dollars of repair bills.

Used Car Inspection at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna

It’s natural for Kelowna drivers to be a little anxious when they buy a used car in the Kelowna area: you worry that it has something wrong with it or that it hasn’t been well maintained. If it’s possible, bring the vehicle in for a used car inspection at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS. Your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor can tell you if there are current or vital emerging problems. The peace of mind is well worth the price of the inspection service.

It's also vital for Kelowna drivers to get on track with the maintenance schedule and stay on track. If you don’t have maintenance records for the vehicle, assume the worst and get started with an oil change at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS. The inspection by your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor that comes with a full service oil change will reveal basic problems. Be sure to bring up any specific concerns with your service advisor. A more intense inspection can find hidden problems like body damage and sealer in A/C units which can be major expenses down the road.

Purchasing a Carfax report may let you know if the vehicle’s been in a major accident and give you a title history. You can find out if that ’71 Barracuda really was owned by a little old lady who only drove it to church on Sundays in Kelowna.

If you’ve bought well, there’s no reason to believe that with proper maintenance your “new” used vehicle won’t last a long time.

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Automotive Tips: Multi-Point Inspection

In a perfect world we Kelowna drivers would get into our cars in the morning and go about our business with no traffic on smooth roads. All the lights would be green, the air would be pure and a gallon of gas would cost a buck. In that world, following car maker vehicle maintenance recommendations might be all you would need to worry about.

But of course, that’s not the way it works. There’s dust and pollution in Kelowna air, traffic jams and potholes. Issues with your car,  don’t come on a schedule,  they just happen. That’s why EUROPRO AUTOHAUS offers multi-point vehicle inspections.

Our well-trained and experienced  EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisors know what to look for and often uncover both minor and major troubles for busy Kelowna drivers.

There may be 3,000 miles to go before you’re scheduled for a new air filter – but if it’s clogged up now we’ll find out and fix it. If our service advisor observes an uneven tire wear pattern, they can investigate the root cause. You may not even remember that curb you hit two months ago that bent your tie rod end, but damage was done and a trained eye can see the effects.

The multi-point inspection gives us an opportunity to inspect for the unexpected. We can help take care of little troubles before they become pricey. Your car will perform better, be more efficient and safer. This is all part of the service and care we incorporate into our standard EUROPRO AUTOHAUS procedures.

Do I Need a New Battery?

Today’s Kelowna vehicles have more electrical components and do-dads than ever before. This really strains your vehicle electrical system, making it hard for the battery to keep up. Think about it: electric seats, seat heaters, power locks, windows and sun roofs. And then Kelowna drivers have all the power outlets for our cell phones, computers, and DVD players. We also have navigation systems and powerful stereos. Plus there are all the engine and transmission computers, traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, sensors and on and on. Even the security system is running off the battery while the vehicle is turned off. And of course, summer heat in BC can take a real toll on battery life.

Fortunately, battery technology has given us resilient batteries that are able to meet these strenuous requirements. But the fact is; batteries just wear out over time. Eventually, every battery gets to the point where it cannot hold enough of a charge to start your vehicle. Sometimes car batteries need to be replaced because they have developed a leak.

Replacement batteries come in all shapes and sizes. Some Kelowna cars have limited space that requires a specially shaped battery to fit. Larger engines require more powerful batteries to get them started. If you live in a cold climate in BC you will need a more powerful battery because engines are harder to start when it is cold. Batteries come in “good”, “better” and “best” grades. High end auto batteries may have a longer warranty and are guaranteed to last longer. As with most things in Kelowna, paying a little more up front saves money in the long run.

Ask your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor to test your battery and advise you on how much life it has left. Stop by or give us a call.

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Automotive Tips: Serpentine Belt Material

Serpentine belts have had the same function for decades: powering the various engine accessories like the alternator, air conditioning compressor and such. The type of material used to make serpentine belts has quietly evolved; so quietly that many Kelowna drivers don’t know about it. The trouble though is that many are looking for the wrong signs of belt wear.

At one time, cars came from the car maker with neoprene belts (there are still neoprene replacement belts) similar to the material used to make wet suits. When these old style belts wore, they would often get shiny or glazed. They would develop cracks. Kelowna drivers knew their belts needed to be replaced if they had three or more cracks in an inch or if they had deep cracks.

Modern belts are made from EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer for you “science geeks”). Small cracks in EPDM belts are normal and will not influence their function. EPDM belts last much longer than the old neoprene belts. Wear on EPDM belts is determined by measuring the wear in the ribs and valleys on the serpentine belt with a simple tool. Once 5% of the belt rib material is lost to normal wear, the belt should be replaced as it is not functioning at optimal capacity and can actually allow slippage that can cause damage to the accessories.

If you search this concept on the internet, you’ll find a lot of the recommendations for belt replacement that are based on the old neoprene belts – so you’re more up to date than those sites are. In the event that you hear a squeal or chirp from you engine compartment, especially at start up, a serpentine belt replacement may be necessary.

At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna, we can inspect your serpentine belt system for belt wear, belt alignment troubles (belt abrasions), pulley troubles, and belt tensioner issues. Your belt tensioner, which keeps the serpentine belt tight, has the same service life as the belt itself so they should be replaced together along with the idler pulleys.

Ask your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor if it’s time to replace your serpentine belt.

Did You Know About Water Pump

The water pump’s like the heart of your cooling system, circulating the fluid throughout. It’s a small pump that’s driven by the engine: usually by belt, but sometimes by a chain or gear. The water pump only operates when the engine’s running. Water pump failure is pretty routine for Kelowna drivers. Some start failing at around 40,000 miles, but most fail by 100,000 miles. Consult your owners’ manual or EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor to see what’s recommended.

Since a water pump either works or it doesn’t, you need to change it when it fails. Water pumps fail in one of two ways: the bearings fail or they begin to leak. It’s possible to have a leak from a cracked water pump, but it usually leaks at the gasket where it attaches to the engine. For a cooling system inspection, call EUROPRO AUTOHAUS.

Tire Rotation And Balancing

You can make your vehicle tires last longer with regular tire rotation and wheel balancing.

Let's start with tire rotation. In normal driving around Kelowna BC, your front tires wear more on the shoulders because they handle much of the cornering forces in turns. Front-wheel drive vehicles have even more force on the front tires.

We rotate the tires so that all of the tires do some duty on the front end as well as getting a little break on the back end. That way, all four tires wear more evenly over their life and last longer.

For most vehicles in Kelowna BC, tires are rotated front to back. Some manufacturers recommend a cross rotational pattern that includes the spare tire, and some high-performance vehicles have different size tires on the front and rear and may even have uni-directional tires that can only be on the left or the right side of the vehicle. Your Kelowna BC service advisor at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS can help you sort that out and will perform the right tire rotation for your vehicle.

Your tire manufacturer will have a recommendation for how often you should rotate your tires

Let's move on to wheel balancing. That's when there are heavy spots on the tire and wheel that cause it to wobble.
Kelowna BC Tire Rotation and Balancing
Balancing adds weights to the wheel to balance it out. Now, we are talking about very small weight differences. Variations in the tire and wheel manufacture can cause a slight imbalance. The valve stem, and now the tire pressure monitoring sensors in the tire, also play into the equation.

Even small differences can cause annoying vibrations at speed: the wheel is essentially bouncing a bit as it goes down the road. For example, at freeway speeds, an out of balance wheel can be slamming into the road 14 times a second. That's annoying and can cause your tires to wear out more quickly.

If a front wheel's out of balance you'll feel the vibration through the steering wheel. When it's a rear tire, you'll feel the vibration through your seat. If you're getting bad vibes from your vehicle, bring it in to see if it's a balance issue or something else. You should balance your wheels whenever you get a new tire or remount a tire, like when it's been removed for a flat repair.

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Tech Question on Your Head Gasket

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Tech Question:
My name is Landon. I bought a new minivan and it started smoking out the tail pipe. My Kelowna service center said my head gasket went out. What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Answer:
The head gasket fits between the top of the engine and the cylinder head. Its job is to seal that connection and keep oil and coolant circulating in the right parts of the engine.

When it leaks, oil can get in the coolant and vice versa. Sometimes coolant or engine oil can get into the combustion chamber where it gets burned with the fuel – which is what makes all that smoke Landon was talking about.

He said his car was new, so it’s likely that the head gasket failed because it was improperly installed – which is very rare. Sometimes they just burn through.

Engine overheating is a leading cause for blown head gaskets. Following the car maker’s schedule for cooling system service is a great way for Kelowna drivers to avoid overheating.

Replacing a head gasket is fairly expensive at Kelowna car repair shops. It’s definitely worth investing in regular cooling system maintenance at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS to avoid that job. Ask your service advisor if it’s time for a cooling system service at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna.

Give us a call.

Fuel Pump Service Kelowna

Help your fuel pump last longer. One pump killer is contamination in the fuel tank. Sometimes this comes from the fuel itself. Buying fuel at a reputable Kelowna station will help make sure you are putting clean fuel into the tank. Older vehicles tend to have more sediment in the tank from years of rust or corrosion from the tank itself. The tank may need a thorough cleaning or replacement.

Another thing you can do is refill your tank when it gets down to about a quarter full. The fuel pump is submerged in the fuel which cools and lubricates it. When the tank runs low, the pump has to work harder to drawup the fuel from the bottom and there is no fuel to cool it. This can lead to premature wear.

When the day comes that your fuel pump needs to be replaced, EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna will use a quality replacement pump that meets or exceeds your 's specifications. The entire assembly should be replaced. Your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor will be sure to install a replacement pump that is compatible with your fuel type. For example, if you have a FlexFuel vehicle that can run on gasoline with up to 85% ethanol content, your fuel system components – including the fuel pump – must be able to withstand the corrosive effects of high alcohol content fuel.
