EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Automotive Tips: Multi-Point Inspection

In a perfect world we Kelowna drivers would get into our cars in the morning and go about our business with no traffic on smooth roads. All the lights would be green, the air would be pure and a gallon of gas would cost a buck. In that world, following car maker vehicle maintenance recommendations might be all you would need to worry about.

But of course, that’s not the way it works. There’s dust and pollution in Kelowna air, traffic jams and potholes. Issues with your car,  don’t come on a schedule,  they just happen. That’s why EUROPRO AUTOHAUS offers multi-point vehicle inspections.

Our well-trained and experienced  EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisors know what to look for and often uncover both minor and major troubles for busy Kelowna drivers.

There may be 3,000 miles to go before you’re scheduled for a new air filter – but if it’s clogged up now we’ll find out and fix it. If our service advisor observes an uneven tire wear pattern, they can investigate the root cause. You may not even remember that curb you hit two months ago that bent your tie rod end, but damage was done and a trained eye can see the effects.

The multi-point inspection gives us an opportunity to inspect for the unexpected. We can help take care of little troubles before they become pricey. Your car will perform better, be more efficient and safer. This is all part of the service and care we incorporate into our standard EUROPRO AUTOHAUS procedures.

Give us a call.

Do I Need a New Battery?

Today’s Kelowna vehicles have more electrical components and do-dads than ever before. This really strains your vehicle electrical system, making it hard for the battery to keep up. Think about it: electric seats, seat heaters, power locks, windows and sun roofs. And then Kelowna drivers have all the power outlets for our cell phones, computers, and DVD players. We also have navigation systems and powerful stereos. Plus there are all the engine and transmission computers, traction control, stability control, anti-lock brakes, sensors and on and on. Even the security system is running off the battery while the vehicle is turned off. And of course, summer heat in BC can take a real toll on battery life.

Fortunately, battery technology has given us resilient batteries that are able to meet these strenuous requirements. But the fact is; batteries just wear out over time. Eventually, every battery gets to the point where it cannot hold enough of a charge to start your vehicle. Sometimes car batteries need to be replaced because they have developed a leak.

Replacement batteries come in all shapes and sizes. Some Kelowna cars have limited space that requires a specially shaped battery to fit. Larger engines require more powerful batteries to get them started. If you live in a cold climate in BC you will need a more powerful battery because engines are harder to start when it is cold. Batteries come in “good”, “better” and “best” grades. High end auto batteries may have a longer warranty and are guaranteed to last longer. As with most things in Kelowna, paying a little more up front saves money in the long run.

Ask your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor to test your battery and advise you on how much life it has left. Stop by or give us a call.

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Automotive Tips: Serpentine Belt Material

Serpentine belts have had the same function for decades: powering the various engine accessories like the alternator, air conditioning compressor and such. The type of material used to make serpentine belts has quietly evolved; so quietly that many Kelowna drivers don’t know about it. The trouble though is that many are looking for the wrong signs of belt wear.

At one time, cars came from the car maker with neoprene belts (there are still neoprene replacement belts) similar to the material used to make wet suits. When these old style belts wore, they would often get shiny or glazed. They would develop cracks. Kelowna drivers knew their belts needed to be replaced if they had three or more cracks in an inch or if they had deep cracks.

Modern belts are made from EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Diene-Monomer for you “science geeks”). Small cracks in EPDM belts are normal and will not influence their function. EPDM belts last much longer than the old neoprene belts. Wear on EPDM belts is determined by measuring the wear in the ribs and valleys on the serpentine belt with a simple tool. Once 5% of the belt rib material is lost to normal wear, the belt should be replaced as it is not functioning at optimal capacity and can actually allow slippage that can cause damage to the accessories.

If you search this concept on the internet, you’ll find a lot of the recommendations for belt replacement that are based on the old neoprene belts – so you’re more up to date than those sites are. In the event that you hear a squeal or chirp from you engine compartment, especially at start up, a serpentine belt replacement may be necessary.

At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna, we can inspect your serpentine belt system for belt wear, belt alignment troubles (belt abrasions), pulley troubles, and belt tensioner issues. Your belt tensioner, which keeps the serpentine belt tight, has the same service life as the belt itself so they should be replaced together along with the idler pulleys.

Ask your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor if it’s time to replace your serpentine belt.

Did You Know About Water Pump

The water pump’s like the heart of your cooling system, circulating the fluid throughout. It’s a small pump that’s driven by the engine: usually by belt, but sometimes by a chain or gear. The water pump only operates when the engine’s running. Water pump failure is pretty routine for Kelowna drivers. Some start failing at around 40,000 miles, but most fail by 100,000 miles. Consult your owners’ manual or EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor to see what’s recommended.

Since a water pump either works or it doesn’t, you need to change it when it fails. Water pumps fail in one of two ways: the bearings fail or they begin to leak. It’s possible to have a leak from a cracked water pump, but it usually leaks at the gasket where it attaches to the engine. For a cooling system inspection, call EUROPRO AUTOHAUS.

Tire Rotation And Balancing

You can make your vehicle tires last longer with regular tire rotation and wheel balancing.

Let's start with tire rotation. In normal driving around Kelowna BC, your front tires wear more on the shoulders because they handle much of the cornering forces in turns. Front-wheel drive vehicles have even more force on the front tires.

We rotate the tires so that all of the tires do some duty on the front end as well as getting a little break on the back end. That way, all four tires wear more evenly over their life and last longer.

For most vehicles in Kelowna BC, tires are rotated front to back. Some manufacturers recommend a cross rotational pattern that includes the spare tire, and some high-performance vehicles have different size tires on the front and rear and may even have uni-directional tires that can only be on the left or the right side of the vehicle. Your Kelowna BC service advisor at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS can help you sort that out and will perform the right tire rotation for your vehicle.

Your tire manufacturer will have a recommendation for how often you should rotate your tires

Let's move on to wheel balancing. That's when there are heavy spots on the tire and wheel that cause it to wobble.
Kelowna BC Tire Rotation and Balancing
Balancing adds weights to the wheel to balance it out. Now, we are talking about very small weight differences. Variations in the tire and wheel manufacture can cause a slight imbalance. The valve stem, and now the tire pressure monitoring sensors in the tire, also play into the equation.

Even small differences can cause annoying vibrations at speed: the wheel is essentially bouncing a bit as it goes down the road. For example, at freeway speeds, an out of balance wheel can be slamming into the road 14 times a second. That's annoying and can cause your tires to wear out more quickly.

If a front wheel's out of balance you'll feel the vibration through the steering wheel. When it's a rear tire, you'll feel the vibration through your seat. If you're getting bad vibes from your vehicle, bring it in to see if it's a balance issue or something else. You should balance your wheels whenever you get a new tire or remount a tire, like when it's been removed for a flat repair.

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Tech Question on Your Head Gasket

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Tech Question:
My name is Landon. I bought a new minivan and it started smoking out the tail pipe. My Kelowna service center said my head gasket went out. What can I do to prevent this from happening again?

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Answer:
The head gasket fits between the top of the engine and the cylinder head. Its job is to seal that connection and keep oil and coolant circulating in the right parts of the engine.

When it leaks, oil can get in the coolant and vice versa. Sometimes coolant or engine oil can get into the combustion chamber where it gets burned with the fuel – which is what makes all that smoke Landon was talking about.

He said his car was new, so it’s likely that the head gasket failed because it was improperly installed – which is very rare. Sometimes they just burn through.

Engine overheating is a leading cause for blown head gaskets. Following the car maker’s schedule for cooling system service is a great way for Kelowna drivers to avoid overheating.

Replacing a head gasket is fairly expensive at Kelowna car repair shops. It’s definitely worth investing in regular cooling system maintenance at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS to avoid that job. Ask your service advisor if it’s time for a cooling system service at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna.

Give us a call.

Fuel Pump Service Kelowna

Help your fuel pump last longer. One pump killer is contamination in the fuel tank. Sometimes this comes from the fuel itself. Buying fuel at a reputable Kelowna station will help make sure you are putting clean fuel into the tank. Older vehicles tend to have more sediment in the tank from years of rust or corrosion from the tank itself. The tank may need a thorough cleaning or replacement.

Another thing you can do is refill your tank when it gets down to about a quarter full. The fuel pump is submerged in the fuel which cools and lubricates it. When the tank runs low, the pump has to work harder to drawup the fuel from the bottom and there is no fuel to cool it. This can lead to premature wear.

When the day comes that your fuel pump needs to be replaced, EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna will use a quality replacement pump that meets or exceeds your 's specifications. The entire assembly should be replaced. Your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor will be sure to install a replacement pump that is compatible with your fuel type. For example, if you have a FlexFuel vehicle that can run on gasoline with up to 85% ethanol content, your fuel system components – including the fuel pump – must be able to withstand the corrosive effects of high alcohol content fuel.

Power Steering Maintenance

Steering is one of the things we take for granted in our vehicles. Let’s break it down into two areas: first, the power assist and second the actual parts that steer the vehicle.

Most people under 40 have never driven a car or truck without power steering. Most vehicles today have a hydraulic power steering pump that provides boost to help you steer. The pump is usually driven by the serpentine belt, but some newer vehicles have an electric pump. Some vehicles even have an electric motor that directly powers the steering.

The important thing to keep in mind is that these pumps and motors will eventually wear out and the hoses will start to leak. You can postpone that day by having a power steering service from time to time. We will drain the old fluid and replace it with fresh fluid. This removes water and contaminants that can corrode power steering parts. Ask your service advisor for the recommended change interval.

What about the mechanical steering parts? Is there anything you can do to maintain them? Yes. If any of the steering parts can be lubed, your technician will take care of that with a lube, oil and filter service. Other than that, just watch for signs that parts are wearing out. Things like loose steering and uneven tire wear.

Worn parts can be replaced to get you back on the road. Now, sometimes parts can be bent or damaged from hitting potholes, curbs or rocks. It’s important to take care of these problems early on. If you neglect them, the damaged parts stress other attached components which starts a chain reaction of damage.

Steering maintenance is pretty straight forward: Replace power steering fluid as recommended and fix worn or damaged parts right away. That’ll save you money in the long run.

Fuel Saving Tip: Tune Ups at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS

Have you ever gone to listen to an orchestra in Kelowna? The musicians take the stage early and tune their instruments. Each individual instrument must be in tune, but the critical thing is for the entire orchestra to be in tune with each other. That's why they tune up together.

Now this is no surprise, I'm going to relate the orchestra to your car. Your vehicle engine has many component systems that each need to be working properly. And the components need to be working in sync, all timed up together in order for the engine to work efficiently.

At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS, we call this, ta da, a tune-up. When an orchestra's out of tune you get a bad concert. When your vehicle's out of tune you get bad performance and bad .

So check your owner's manual for your recommended tune-up schedule. Or ask your friendly and knowledgeable EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor what he thinks. Just be careful not to say you want to make beautiful music together – that kinda makes us uncomfortable.

Chilling In Kelowna With Winter Tires

There's more to winter tires than Kelowna may think. Those days of clunky, tractor-like snow tires are long gone in BC, replaced by high-tech winter tires with special rubber compounds and advanced tread designs.

In Kelowna winter temperatures, the rubber in summer tires becomes hard and inflexible and they don't grip the road as well. In contrast, winter tires use special rubber compounds that are more pliable when the thermometer drops below 45 degrees in BC giving you better road contact; so even if you don't get much snow, winter tires will really add to your cold weather safety in Kelowna.

Winter tires may also use a micro-pore rubber compound that increases surface area so they can bite into ice and packed snow on Kelowna roads.

The tread on winter tires needs to clear out water, snow, and slush as the tire turns so it's ready to take another bite when it comes back in contact with the road. But summer tires can actually be dangerous because they get packed with snow, making them very slick, and your vehicle hard to control. Winter tires have a lot of thin slits in the tread called sipes which help the tire grab ice and packed snow, providing extra traction.

Many new vehicles come with all-season tires which are great for a wide range of weather and road conditions but don't provide top performance in BC snow and ice. For example, winter tires provide 25 to 50% more traction than all-season tires. And all-season tires take up to 42% longer to stop than winter tires in slick conditions.

For all these reasons, the tire experts at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna recommend you put winter tires on all four wheels because it makes sense to have equal traction and handling at all four corners of your vehicle. Uneven traction could result in loss of control for Kelowna .

Your vehicle may be equipped with stability control, anti-lock brakes and traction control – all important safety systems for BC . But in order to do their job you still need good traction in Kelowna. Winter tires help you start, stop and corner when things get cold and slippery.

So when temperatures drop below 45 degrees, be sure you have a set of four winter tires for maximum performance in snow, ice and wet roads. Your friendly and knowledgeable EUROPRO AUTOHAUS tire professional can help you find the right winter tire for your vehicle and driving needs in Kelowna.

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Tech Question On Your Drive Shaft

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Tech Question:
I'm Doug. A few years ago I was driving my '85 powder blue Dodge Ramcharger with about 80,000 miles (125,000 kilometers) on it. I was going up a hill in Kelowna and heard a noise like a tin can rolling down the road. I looked back and saw my drive shaft bouncing down the hill. I put it in four wheel drive and drove to my Kelowna mechanic to get it fixed.

What could I have done to prevent that?

EUROPRO AUTOHAUS Tech Answer:
Now that's quite a story. Doug was fortunate that his vehicle had a part-time four wheel drive system that would let him get home without a rear drive shaft.

This “case of the missing drive shaft” highlights the need for regular inspections. Now most drivers in Kelowna are familiar with recommendations for preventive maintenance services like oil changes and coolant replacement. What you may not know is that there are also recommendations for inspections at various intervals.

By the time a vehicle gets 80,000 miles on it like Doug had, the owner's manual would have called for of things like the suspension, brakes – and the drive line. Chances are that such an inspection at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS would have revealed early signs of a worn u-joint and Doug could have had it fixed before his drive shaft went rattling down the road.

Ask your friendly and knowledgeable professionals at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS about the inspections your vehicle should have.

Need A Suspension Inspection At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS In Kelowna?

Your suspension system keeps your car up off the road. From there, it's responsible for a smooth and comfortable ride around Kelowna. It also keeps your vehicle wheels firmly planted over bumps and through curves on Kelowna roads and s.

Your suspension system has many parts that do a big job. They should be inspected for damage and excessive wear at least once a year. A good time would be when you get your alignment check in Kelowna.

Here are some warning signs of suspension problems: the vehicle pulls to one side, wandering, erratic steering, uneven tire wear, leaning, shocks bottom out, poor ride or handling, oil leaking from shocks, and excessive bouncing.

Now vehicle suspension parts just wear out over time. Shocks and struts eventually lose their ability to control your ride. If you're in an accident, your vehicle suspension can be damaged or knocked out of alignment. Even a minor accident, like hitting a curb, pothole or large rock can mess things up.

If you suspect suspension problems, ask for and let the friendly and knowledgeable s at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna set things right.

Better Service At EUROPRO AUTOHAUS For Better Fuel Economy

Kelowna drivers who maintain their vehicles make them more efficient. A car or truck that is well-maintained works the way it was designed to and that means it uses less fuel: And you save money.

To help organize our discussion, let's think of things that rob us of fuel economy in two ways: increased friction and inefficient fuel combustion.

Friction. Anything that increases friction increases drag or load on the vehicle engine. It has to work harder to overcome the drag – and that takes more fuel.

The first thing that comes to mind is engine oil. Low oil means there's not enough to fully lubricate the engine so there's more friction. The wrong viscosity and grade of oil can also adversely affect fuel economy in Kelowna. Dirty oil won't lubricate as well as clean oil. The same principles apply to transmission fluid. Getting your oil changed and transmission serviced on schedule will reduce friction and save money. Consider upgrading to synthetic oils in your differentials, engine and transmission to reduce friction.

Another friction related problem is under-inflated tires. When your vehicle tires are low on air, it's like driving through sand – the engine has to work harder to move every mile. Check your tire pressure at least once a month.

Sticking or binding brakes put a drag on your vehicle and can hurt mileage. A simple brake inspection at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna can uncover potential problems.

Let's move on to Fuel. A dirty fuel system has varnish and gum interfering and the fuel injectors may be unable to deliver the correct amount of fuel at the right pressure and in the spray pattern that the engineers intended. A fuel system cleaning in Kelowna will get all of that working right and really improve fuel economy.

Replacing worn spark plugs will burn your fuel as efficiently as possible, saving money at Kelowna gas pumps.

Smart Car Care in Kelowna: Debunking The Maintenance Free Myth

Myths start with a grain of evidence and are then built up and circulated around the Kelowna area with a lot of imagination and very elastic logic. And the internet is a breeding ground for automotive myths. Some car bloggers in BC recall the vehicles of yesteryear and declare their modern decedents to be virtually maintenance free and that anyone who says otherwise is out to rip you off.

Let’s examine a couple of the more popular rants going around Kelowna and look at the truth behind them. The first one is that the chassis no longer needs lubrication for suspension, steering and the driveline. They declare that any Kelowna service center who has charged you for lubrication is a charlatan. The truth on which the myth is based, is that most vehicles come from the factory with sealed joints and cannot be greased. However, there are still some grease points on some cars. A grease fitting may have been installed in conjunction with a repair. And most trucks and truck based SUVs still require chassis lubrication. This is because they are more heavy duty and proper greasing is still required to keep them going. Talk to us at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna.

Another common rant is that modern cars don’t need tune-ups. Do cars need tune-ups? That depends on your definition of a tune-up, which has changed as technology has progressed. Before engine control computers, electronic ignition and fuel injection, a tune up meant replacing mechanical parts that wore out. You’d manually adjust fuel, air mix and timing. When these adjustments were off, spark plugs would foul and need to be replaced.

This definition just doesn’t apply to modern vehicles. Kelowna auto service centers generally consider a tune-up to be the major service visit, recommended by your car maker, every 30,000 miles or so.

Of course, you can’t lubricate a sealed joint. Of course, you can’t adjust a carburetor if your car doesn’t have one. You don’t need to change spark plugs every year if your car maker says they can go 30,000 miles. What are these car bloggers getting so worked up about?

The danger with these modern-day myths, is that they prevent Kelowna drivers from taking care of the vital routine preventive car maintenance that car makers DO recommend. Listen to this partial list of things you still need to do to take care of your car. How many of them are really any different today than they were 20 or 30 years ago?

Oil change, cooling system service, transmission service, tire balancing, tire rotation, wheel alignment, suspension service, power steering service, proper tire inflation, brake service, differential service, battery maintenance, engine air filer, PCV valve, breather element, fuel filter, belts, hoses, timing belt, windshield wipers . . .

You get the picture. Your car or truck is still a machine that needs to be maintained. And, hey, your service advisors have always adapted to keep pace with automotive technology. Next time you come across an angry voice about your car care, talk to your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor, or do some research of your own.

Minimizing Blind Spots In Kelowna For Safer Driving

When we Kelowna drivers travel around BC, each of us must deal with blind spots. We can greatly reduce our blind spots by properly adjusting our vehicle mirrors to give the widest coverage possible. We should make the adjustments before we pull out of our Kelowna driveway.

First, adjust your rear view mirror to give the best possible view directly to the rear of your vehicle. You don’t need it to get a better view of either side of the car, the kids in the back seat or your dazzling smile. The rear view mirror should look to the rear. Next, lean your head until it almost touches the driver’s side window. Adjust your side mirror so that you can just barely see the side of your car. Now, lean your head to the middle of the car and adjust the outside mirror so that you can barely see the right side of the vehicle.

Kelowna drivers who adjust their mirrors this way will have maximum coverage. Of course driving in the Kelowna area is a dynamic process – things change every second. So it’s wise to take a quick look to the side when passing to make sure that another vehicle hasn’t moved into an area you couldn’t see in your mirrors.

As you drive on busy Kelowna roads, avoid staying in other driver’s blind spots. You can’t count on them to be watching their mirrors and looking out for you. Pass large trucks and buses on the left whenever possible. Kelowna truckers' blind spots are much larger on the right. Lastly, be attentive and wear your seat belts.

Engine Air Filter Basics for Kelowna

Today in the EUROPRO AUTOHAUS car care blog, we want to talk about your engine air filter. That’s the filter that cleans the air before it’s burned in your engine. Kelowna drivers wonder how often they should change their engine air filter. The simple answer is when it’s dirty. That’s a function of how much air has passed through the filter, so your car maker will recommend a mileage interval for replacing the air filter. But you can imagine that how dirty the air is would affect how quickly the filter gets filled.

If you drive where there’s lots of dust, pollution or pollen around Kelowna, your engine air filter will get dirty more quickly and need to be changed sooner. That’s why we check the air filter with every full-service oil change at EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in Kelowna. We can visually tell if the filter needs to be changed. Your filter can only hold so much dirt. Once the filter is full, dirt will pass through to the engine. This dirt gums up the combustion chamber and hurts gas mileage and may cause damage. It can also contaminate the Mass Air Flow Sensor which will affect drivability and can be fairly pricey to replace.

A dirty air filter would also restrict the amount of air that gets to the engine which hurts gas mileage. We can replace your engine air filter with one that matches the factory specifications or you can upgrade your filter for enhanced performance. So when your EUROPRO AUTOHAUS service advisor shows you your dirty air filter, you know how vital it is to get it replaced.

Finding Vehicle Recall Information in Kelowna

No matter how well they’re made, vehicles will have design or manufacturing problems. And when the government thinks a problem is really serious, they require the car maker to issue a recall notice and fix the car free of charge. The car maker then tries to contact everyone who owns that type of car to get the recall work done.

These recalls always affect safety, so Kelowna drivers should take them seriously. It’s easy for Kelowna folks to see if a vehicle’s being recalled.

The US government has links on its websites, such as http://www.nhtsa.gov, and there are many websites with free recall information and searches. There’s carfax.com; autobytel.com; and dmv.org.

Recalls are serious, but not all that common. Sometimes there are less significant issues, and for these, manufacturers issue a Technical Service Bulletin – or TSB, which tells Kelowna auto service centers how to repair a frequent or difficult problem.

The the automotive pros at  EUROPRO AUTOHAUS in
Kelowna get updated information through subscription plans, also available in consumer versions for a reasonable cost.

So when vehicle recalls occurs, get the work done at
EUROPRO AUTOHAUS, and keep you and yours safe.
